While you may not know Hunter Fieri yet, you will soon. The young chef is the son of legendary Food Network host Guy Fieri and is gearing up to follow in his father’s footsteps.
While Hunter was only 10 when Guy won the second season of The Next Food Network Star, he’s been surrounded by his dad’s cooking since he was born. Guy opened the first Garlic the year Hunter was born, so the younger Fieri is well-acquainted with the restaurant business.
However, when Hunter was younger he seemed adamant that he wouldn’t follow in his father’s footsteps, and instead vowed to get into motor-cross racing! So, what changed to make him want to follow in his dad’s footsteps?
“Cooking’s What We Do”
In an interview with Delish, Hunter opened up about his career path. “I didn’t really like anything else,” Hunter said about his earlier jobs. “I liked to be outside, and I liked construction and what not, but cooking is what it is. It’s what I do. It’s what we all do.”
Hunter had previously worked for two of his dad’s restaurants, Johnny Garlic’s and Tex Wasabi’s. Hunter and Guy both are quite proud of his path to success in both restaurants, though. Hunter started off washing dishes, not looking to get ahead by using his father’s influence.
Friends in High Places
Hunter is currently enrolled in college at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. While that’s where his dad went, it’s also one of the best hospitality programs in the country. Hunter seems quite proud of the way he’s forging his own path. In fact, he almost studied in his penultimate semester under Gordon Ramsay in London!
That plan fell through, sadly, due to the University not offering Hunter any credits for it. However, Guy is quick to remind everyone that he doesn’t call in favors for his son. “The Gordon opportunity — that was Hunter talking to Gordon,” Guy said in their interview with Delish. “I don’t call any buddies for favors. Hunter doesn’t play it. That’s one of the things I’m most proud of.”
A Bright Future
Hunter has appeared alongside his dad in a number of Food Network shows. He was seen as a host, and then a judge, on Guy’s Grocery Games. He also headlined the five-episode special Guy and Hunter’s European Vacation with his father. In these appearances, his more understated, quiet confidence shines through. Where Guy has a huge force of personality and tons of energy on-screen, Hunter is more reserved. That said, he clearly has the chops to be a celebrity chef.
Hunter’s clearly not content to just be “Guy Fieri’s Kid.” He wants to be a famous, well-respected chef on his own merits. “I want the restaurants and the shows and the cookbooks — and more. I have to one-up dad, of course,” Hunter joked in the Delish interview. While he may have said it in jest, we wouldn’t put it past him to do just that!
