Halloween Wars, the popular spin-off from the creators of Cake Wars and Cupcake Wars, returns this October. The first episode, ironically, aired last night, the day before the start of October. This season marks the series’ seventh, and this year it is hosted by Jonathan Bennett. Bennett, who you’ll remember from Cake Wars, brings a new charm to this frighteningly good series.
If you’re not familiar with the series, here’s a quick synopsis. In Halloween Wars, five teams of three duke it out over the course of four episodes throughout the course of October. Each week, the five teams battle to create the best Halloween-themed cakes, deserts and displays. Each team’s creation is judged by a panel of three judges. Every episode, the two permanent judges are joined by a guest judge.
The teams compete in two competitions each episode. The first challenge is called a Small Scare, and in this challenge the teams interpret a spooky theme. Their interpretation is much more open than the second challenge, the Spine Chiller. In the Spine Chiller, teams are given a more in-depth theme and must create an edible display on that theme.
Each week, a team is sent home and the rest move on. Whoever wins the whole thing takes home $50,000 and bragging rights.
This season is set to bring the scary-good deserts back to the forefront. Host Jonathan Bennett started the season off last night with a challenge called “The Hitchhiker’s Worst Nightmare.” This challenge saw teams creating displays depicting what happens to a hitchhiker after accepting a ride from a mysterious stranger.
The guest judge in episode one was Shane West. Horror lovers remember West from Salem, in which he starred, and he even fronts the Twilight Creeps. The Twilight Creeps are a horror-themed rock band that, naturally, loves the Halloween time of year.
Halloween Wars will air Sundays in October. Be sure to catch it on Food Network!
