His Degree is in Drama

If you expected the famous celebrity chef to have started in culinary arts, you’d be mistaken! Alton Brown graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in drama. Also, if you’ve struggled academically, don’t let it get to you. Alton switched schools twice, and it took him seven years to finish college. He originally saw his career as being acting, and food was a sort of happy accident.

His First Jobs Were as Cameraman

While acting has always been Brown’s passion, he started out on the other side of the camera. He had several odd jobs on commercials early on. In fact, he even directed photography for an REM music video. The video in question was “The One I Love.” How’s that for trivia?

He Hates Hanging Out with Chefs

In an interview for a book on Food Network’s history, Alton got into his distaste for hanging out with chefs. “I am absolutely petrified by people in white coats,” Brown stated. “I don’t care if it’s a dentist, a doctor, or a chef. They all scare the hell out of me. I don’t hang out with chefs, they frighten me.”

He’s Been on Spongebob

Of Brown’s many television appearances, the oddest by far was his cameo on Spongebob. In 2008, he had a small role on the popular children’s show as a game show host. However, he’s hardly the strangest cameo the show has ever had. In the movie version of the show, David Hasselhoff appears, in live action, as himself. That was an odd one!
